Indepth: Our Team

Our team is different than others that may be found in the willamette valley, for a few key reasons.

First, and probably most important, our hightest goal is to have fun, and be a family. While learning about technology, science, and engineering are the very ideals of F.I.R.S.T. without fun, what is a robotics team? Well, it's school, in all reality. We pride ourselves on making build season, and competition, fun. We may not always win an award, or get to the top of the competition, but we can guarentee we have the most fun doing it.

Secondly, we are not a school affiliated organization. While most robotics teams are organized under a school district, we instead are a Venture Crew (Think boy scouts, but not gender specific). This allows us to recruit from all the small schools in our area, rather than relying on the Lebanon High School. We are also free of politics related to the education department. Downsides exist aswell, however. We do not have the advantage of having school hours to work, nor can we get extracurricular bonuses, but we are known pretty universally throughout our community.

The above two items tie directly into one another. While school groups have summer vacation that allows for teams to drift, and lose three months of work time, we meet regularly throughout the year, and enjoy our summer vacation to build our team together, such as going on camping trips together up to San Juan, Washington. Having opportunities such as that also make us a different kind of robotics team.

Finally, although lower on the totem pole compared to other things listed, we like to look good. This is shown through our dedication to making our pit look good in off-season, spending the last night painting the robot (literally, I personally, spent all night before send off finishing our paintjob), and shines in the glimmer of our spirit and imagery awards, that we have obtained at least one of, every year. We are remembered at regionals for being the most flamboyant, outlandishly dressed, and DEFINITELY loudest (quite a few raw vocal cords can account for that) at everything we do. We lighten everyone around us, and make them smile, even if they are down and having trouble getting up.
