Dear Sponsors,

The Scalawags would like to thank you for your support for the 2006/2007 season. Our team saw a significant increase in members over the previous season from 18 to 22. We continue to add new students and expect to be even larger in 2008.

This year we competed in Regional Events in Portland, OR, and Davis, CA. In Portland our robot "Plunderbot" made a strong showing in qualifying matches and we earned the position of captain of the 5th Alliance in the finals. Unfortunately our radio failed in the finals and our alliance was defeated. In Davis we did not do as well on the field but won the highest recognition that FIRST awards at a Regional, The Chairman's Award. Our lead mentor won the Woodie Flowers Award, the highest award a mentor can earn. We clearly stood out with our pirate theme, evident in the decoration of our robot, costumes, and pit design, which earned us The Visualization Award. Our team's Safety Czar won a special award for her spirit and constant encouragement for others to use good safety practices. Wining The Chairman's Award qualified us for The Championship Event in Atlanta, GA. However, our budget did not include funds for this additional event and we did not attend. All in all it was a fun and exciting year.

FIRST continues to grow and is successful at influencing students to select careers in science and technology. In 2007, graduating high school seniors who participate in FIRST have over $9 million in scholarships available for college tuition. Alumni of The Scalawags will participate in a summer intern program at NASA Goddard Space Center for her third year. This opportunity was made possible to a large part because of her participation in FIRST.

The FIRST Robotics program requires significant funding each year. The Scalawags would like to attend a regional and The Championship Event in 2008 and our budget is expected to be approximately $25,000. We greatly appreciate your support in the 2006/2007 season and hope you will continue your support for the 2007/2008 season.

Thank you,

The Scalawags
